“ Today was my 2nd visit this year. Okay, but it was not my 2nd time dining here. I first came here when I was a wee child. Exactly how old, I really could not remember. Just know that Chatterbox was used to be on the first floor and the hotel was still Mandarin Singapore. After Hilton took over the hotel last year and after an extensive renovation, the Chatterbox today was modern and beautiful. Today I came with a friend whom I knew lately through Yelp! It started off with Deb reaching out to me since she would be coming to Singapore with her mom and her sister. I guess she was so surprised I replied her message and said I would be more than happy to make some suggestions on places to eat. Honestly I did not think it was a big deal. We both met up the day before and she actually said I looked so much older in my pics on Yelp. Sob!! :~( But she went on and said I was the best looking person on this island since they arrived last week. Hahaha!! I told her she needed to see an eye doctor. Deb, I hope you would read this review :D I had made reservation weeks ago which I would suggest when one has a group. I would not mind sitting on the high table if it is just me or with one more person. Since Deb has her elderly mother on this trip, we definitely need a standard table. It was fun eating with Deb and her family. I would usually order just one main but Deb would order a few items to share. Because of that, I got the opportunity to try a few different mains which I normally would not order. Unfortunately I concluded the local food in Singapore did not align with Deb and her family flavor profile. They felt the lobster laksa (sorry no pic), seafood hokkien noodles and chicken rice were not flavorful. As a local, I thought they were all really good. The chicken rice was obviously the selling point of Chatterbox and my favorite here. The lobster laksa was an elevated laksa. I thought the laksa gravy was definitely legit but felt the lobster version was a bit much and such a waste to cook in laksa. The seafood hokkien noodles was definitely flavorful but I felt it was a bit heavy for me. I tried a piece of chicken satay. That would be a 5/5 satay. The chicken meat was tender and the peanut sauce was so good. Yes, I tried to be very careful as I suspected I may have some nut allergy going on. FOOD 4/5 So here's my take on the food: Mandarin Chicken Rice - 5/5 (comes with a bowl of rice, 1/4 chicken and soup plus condiments) Satay - 5/5 Lobster Laksa - 4/5 Seafood Hokkien Noodles - 4/5 We had the home made Osmanthus Oolong tea which was a little sparkling and pretty nice. AMBIENCE 5/5 It was modern and love the green menu. The green accent throughout the restaurant was pretty. The restaurant was always packed when I was there. SERVICE 5/5 Service was always good. The staffs made good recommendation too. I never get to eat the dessert here but hope one day I would get to try it. I may need to find someone to eat with and the person can help me eat a bit of my food so I have room for dessert. I hardly eat dinner with anyone anymore, though I do enjoying dining alone. “ i was in the area so i stopped in without a reservation around 6pm both nights. i ate here two nights in a row. the restaurant sits you at a high table for people without reservations. the place is modern, comfortable, and elegant. the first night i ordered the hainanese chicken rice dish, followed by the stingray, and finished with the dessert. a nice ice cream and cake in the local flavor. the first bit of the chicken was dry and i was severely disappointed. i moved on to the next piece, then realized i had the best bite of chicken in my life. the dry piece was the end piece; ok fine, not ideal but i get it. stingray came next and it was the first time i had this fish. light fluffy tender and moist. the meat was delicious. the flavor was spicy, tangy, filled with herbs. i was more interested in the fish as i never had it before so i pushed most of the flavor toppings to the side. the dessert was pendan cake and pandan gelato. the cake was moist. the ice cream was smooth and silky. however, i think a lot of additives were mixed in. the ice cream didn't melt, it wasn't very cold at room temp. the second night i ordered the kampong nasi goreng because i saw it nearby the night before. the food was good. everything was cooked right. but it wasn't my flavor profile. i did like the variety on the plate. i paired it with a cocktail. i didn't want the level of sugar so i asked for carbonated water instead of tonic. i finished the meal with a chendol. it was very light, not super sweet which is the way i like it, and the shaved ice was nice as it was a hot muggy day. i would definitely stop in again next time i'm in the area. ”

“ Make a reservation on Chope at least two weeks in advance if you want to dine at a reasonable hour on the weekends. *Tip: Chope is offering a 10% off voucher if you would like to buy a gift certificate ahead of time. I believe Hilton members also get a discount (as it is located inside Hilton Orchard). I love the beautiful interior of Chatterbox. The remodeled restaurant is very elegant and classy. The seats are well spaced-out and I always feel comfortable when dining here. There are bar seats, sofa couches, private dining rooms, etc. We started with the Grilled Satay appetizer ($16). There were 6 skewers of smoky-flavored, charcoal-grilled chicken and beef. The peanut sauce dip was sweet and savory! Chatterbox has been serving their signature Mandarin Chicken Rice set ($25) since 1971. The boneless chicken is incredibly tender, juicy, and flavorful. The set comes with a warm aromatic soup and broth-cooked jasmine rice. I enjoyed dipping my chicken in the homemade signature chili sauce and ginger puree. The service was fantastic. I had mentioned in my reservation notes that we were celebrating an anniversary and Chatterbox surprised us with a delicious and soft pandan chiffon cake for dessert. I would highly recommend trying out Chatterbox for a weekday/weekend lunch. ”

“ The first time I stepped in here in the 2000's, it was a low key affair with the shop window facing Orchard Road. Yes, it was inside a swanky hotel, but the experience was akin to visiting an air-conditioned stall...nothing fancy, just great food back then. I became enamored with Chicken Rice after watching a Singaporean Comedy, " Chicken Rice Wars," watch it. It's a fun PG romance story bridging the class divide in Singaporean society. ... But I diverge.... Clearly, there are less expensive options and more savory versions of Singaporean Chicken Rice at local stalls. Arguing about the "best" chicken rice in SG can lead to arguments, family estrangements, and worse. I won't go there. I have My favorite SG stall which I won't share publicly less it gets overwhelmed with "newbies." Chatterbox has withstood the test of time, surviving recessions, remodelings, relocations, and COVID. The experience and ambiance has also changed dramatically. Prices are sky-high and it's now it's more of a luxury experience. The interior is exquisite, staff impeccably attentive, and the ambiance is more of a white-table cloth, fine dining experience. Unfortunately, something got lost along the way. The food is still good, not great...just good. Come here for chicken rice, swanky cocktails, 75 SGD sparkling tea, after some shopping at Ngee Ann City or Takashimaya. Unfortunately, other dishes we tried at this visit didn't pass the beginner cook level....and neither did some basic service fundamentals. As soon as we were seated, the server tried to up-sell us on a 75 SGD bottle of tea. We politely declined her repeated, severe insistence , which frankly had us a bit uncomfortable. We settled on a bottle of Italian, still water at a more reasonable price. We started with chicken satay...a generous portion of six large, chicken skewers in one order. These were very good and presented nicely. Taste, texture, all was great. We also tried an order of chicken wings. These were regrettable. These really were chicken wings...no chicken drumettes here! The taste had a mealy texture of grainy, uncooked flour with curry. Some of the inside of what little meat was there was undercooked and red. Something tells me the oil wasn't hot enough to crisp the flour coating and cook the meat. In addition, we had two orders of chicken rice and one of beef hor-fun. The chicken rice was nicely presented, and very good. For those not familiar, this version is served slightly cool...so don't expect steaming pieces of breast meat. However this is perfect for the weather and succulent, perfectly poached meat is accompanied by steaming chicken rice and boiling hot, clear chicken broth, with dipping sauces and cucumbers. Perfect!! The hor-fun was a regrettable disaster: an almost undescribable, brown mound of a floating mass swimming in a soup bowl of reddish sauce. The taste was ok, but this abomination demands intervention less the reputation of Singapore be stained by such a disaster. It really was that bad. We poured out some of the liquid to be able to see the noodles. For those not familiar, hor-fun is an almost-dry dish. It is a stir fry, and the noodles can sit on a slight bed of "gravy." But it is Not a wet noodle dish like ramen or won-ton noodle soup. Then the service....after the first course, the server comes fully loaded to place the main dishes in the table....yet the table hadn't been cleared!!! We are forced to scramble and hold up or shuffle dishes in the air while the server puts down the trays on the table. So there we are, doing gymnastics holding several dirty dishes while we wait for another server to rescue us. This is simply intolerable and embarrassment to the training at this establishment. I'll consider this an isolated incident during this visit. Overall, the visit was great for the chicken rice and the ambiance. Come here for the chicken rice if you are in the area. Hint: enter via the exterior escalators on Orchard Road near the Victoria's Secret store. CB is on the 5th floor. Then walk over to the same tower as the Hilton Hotel. ”
